Les Cévennes, au XVIe siècle. Alors qu'il rentre chez lui, Michael Kohlhaas, marchand réformé d'origine allemande, se heurte à un baron, qui a décidé d'installer un péage pour passer sur ses terres. N'ayant pas d'argent sur lui, le marchand doit laisser en gage ses chevaux et un valet pour s'en occuper, mais les bêtes sont maltraitées et les hommes du baron lâchent leurs chien sur le valet. Michael Kohlhaas, qui a foi en la justice, tente d'obtenir réparation en faisant appel à un avocat, mais il est débouté trois fois par le tribunal ; le baron est un homme puissant. Sa femme Judith le convainc de la laisser se présenter à la cour, car elle pense qu'elle aura plus de facilité, en tant que femme, à approcher la princesse pour plaider sa cause. Mais Judith est assassinée. Kohlhaas confie sa fille à son pasteur, et part se venger…
